Cohesive, frictional powders: contact models for tension
نویسنده
چکیده
The contacts between cohesive, frictional particles with sizes in the range 0.1–10μm are the subject of this study. Discrete element model (DEM) simulations rely on realistic contact force models—however, too much details make both implementation and interpretation prohibitively difficult. A rather simple, objective contact model is presented, involving the physical properties of elastic–plastic repulsion, dissipation, adhesion, friction as well as rollingand torsion-resistance. This contact model allows to model bulk properties like friction, cohesion and yield-surfaces. Very loose packings and even fractal agglomerates have been reported in earlier work. The same model also allows for pressure-sintering and tensile strength tests as presented in this study.

About contacts of adhesive, elasto-plastic, frictional powders
Granular materials can be studied in a split-bottom ring shear cell geometry, where they show wide shear bands under slow, quasi-static, large deformation. The contact models are at the basis of their interesting collective behavior and flow-rheology as well the core ingredient for the discrete element method (DEM). The contact mechanics used involves elasto-plastic, viscous, frictional, and to...
متن کاملIsotropic compression of cohesive-frictional particles with rolling resistance
Cohesive-frictional and rough powders are the subject of this study. The behavior under isotropic compression is examined for different material properties involving Coulomb friction, rolling-resistance and contact-adhesion. Under isotropic compression, the density continuously increases according to Bauers exponential law, see Ref. (Bauer 1999). However, at a certain pressure/density, the beha...
متن کاملStrain Localization of Elastic-Damaging Frictional-Cohesive Materials: Analytical Results and Numerical Verification
Damage-induced strain softening is of vital importance for the modeling of localized failure in frictional-cohesive materials. This paper addresses strain localization of damaging solids and the resulting consistent frictional-cohesive crack models. As a supplement to the framework recently established for stress-based continuum material models in rate form (Wu and Cervera 2015, 2016), several ...

Handling and processing of bulk granular materials is of major importance in many industries including agriculture, chemical, food, pharmaceutical, construction and mining. In recent decades, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is increasingly adopted for studying the complex behaviour of granular materials and simulating the industrial processes in many applications. DEM computes at individual p...
متن کاملThe effect of contact torques on porosity of cohesive powders
The porosity of uniaxially compacted cohesive powders depends on the applied stress (including gravity). The case, where these stresses are weak, is considered. The compaction results in a porosity which is a function of sliding, rolling and torsion friction. By contact dynamics simulations it is shown that the influences of contact torques (static rolling and torsion friction) on the porosity ...
